A Mahāpahta Yoga retreat is not a vacation but an opportunity to practice authentic esoteric yoga techniques in an ideal setting while being supported by a loving and accepting spiritual community and a knowledgeable and experienced teacher. Having the right teacher, community, and space when practicing can make the difference between success and failure when using these techniques. If you are serious about yoga as a spiritual path, then you owe it to yourself to see just how powerful and transformative these retreats can be.
This one-night meditation-retreat will focus on seated meditation or Zazen and walking-meditation or Kinhin. Seated-meditation, when used appropriately, is one of the most accessible, useful, and powerful practices available to the spiritual seeker. It is the center from which all other yoga techniques radiate like spokes on a wheel. Without it, all other yoga methods become activities that may yield temporary ecstatic mystical experiences or calming and relaxing effects, but ultimately do not end our suffering and thus may lead to an addictive relationship with spiritual practices that is akin to the one an alcoholic has with alcohol.
If new to meditation, your retreat will start with Yin Yoga and instruction on seated and walking meditation. If, however, you are already comfortable with Zazen and Kinhin you will begin several hours of seated and walking meditation immediately upon arrival. On Friday morning strict silence or Mauna will be observed, and the beginners will join the more experienced meditators for several hours of meditation. Douglas Johnson will offer Dokusan, a one-on-one interview with the teacher at this time. Dokusan is an opportunity to ask any relevant questions about your practice in private. We will conclude with tea, dharma discussion and then brunch.
