Yoga Nidra is the Yogic practice of ‘sleep meditation.’ This practice has many of the same benefits as seated meditation while mostly avoiding the difficulties that beginners experience when first trying to meditate. Practiced laying-down, in Yoga Nidra once comfortable, a facilitator leads you into a meditative state. The fact that it is guided and done laying-down make Yoga Nidra the perfect meditation practice for first-time meditators or people who have had difficulty meditating in the past. However, don’t let its accessibility fool you. Yoga Nidra is a very profound and powerful Yogic technique that can help facilitate personal change and transformation on every level of human experience be it physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual.
While superficially, most people report feeling very relaxed after a Yoga Nidra practice, therapeutically Yoga Nidra has been shown to be very good for conditions related to stress and trauma like PTSD and ADHD. There have been studies done that show that just 11 hours of Yoga Nidra are enough to cause measurable changes in the brain. However, according to the Yogic tradition, the effects of Yoga Nidra go far beyond just being therapeutic. Its results can be genuinely life-changing by facilitating personal changes in long-standing habit-patterns and disempowering beliefs thus helping us manifest the life we’ve always wanted. Beyond this, Yoga Nidra can help us access the unfathomable experience of spiritual realization which takes us beyond physical benefits alone to the true meaning of Yoga which is reunification with our true nature, essence, or source. All of this is possible with a consistent and repeated Yoga Nidra practice.
In this workshop, we will do two Yoga Nidra sessions that will last approximately 30-45 minutes each. Session 1 will be an Advanced Yoga Nidra where we will use intention and energetic processes to help us let go of old negative habit patterns (vasanas) and create new beneficial action (or karma) in our lives. Session 2 will be a Kids Yoga Nidra which can help us to access our inner child and move past childhood traumas, discover hidden talents and creativity, and unlock repressed parts of our identity and personality.
This Advanced Yoga Nidra workshop is a part of An Afternoon of Mahāpatha Yoga at Evolation Yoga Midtown that includes Advanced Yoga Nidra $25 (12p – 2p), Yin/Yang Pranayama $35 (2:30p – 5:30p), and Kirtan with Douglas Johnson & The Mahāpatha Players $15 (6p – 7:30p). You may drop-in to each workshop individually or attend all three for just $60. Douglas Johnson E-RYT 500, YACEP will lead all practices.
