About the Weekend
On this weekend retreat, we will work with a range of traditional yogic and contemplative practices designed to support a deep and embodied meditation experience. These include Yin Yoga (passive, long-held postures), Hatha Yoga (active, steady postures), Prāṇāyāma (yogic breathing techniques), Yoga Nidra (guided sleep meditation), and Mantra (yogic chanting). Together, these practices prepare the body, breath, and nervous system for sustained engagement with Dhyāna—seated meditation (Zazen)—often considered the most direct and potent of all yogic practices.
Participants will receive clear instruction on the first evening in both seated meditation (Zazen) and walking meditation (Kinhin), making the retreat accessible to those new to formal meditation practice. At the same time, this retreat is not only for beginners. By reconnecting meditation with its yogic foundations, we aim to revitalize and deepen established practices, inviting a more integrated and alive relationship with meditation, ourselves, and the world we inhabit.
Through years of teaching meditation in a variety of contexts, I have found that an immersive weekend retreat is one of the most effective ways to introduce, establish, or re-establish a consistent daily meditation practice. If you have struggled to maintain a regular home practice—or feel disconnected from meditation—this weekend offers a supportive and focused environment to help you reset, recommit, and move forward with clarity.
No prior experience in meditation or yoga is required; all levels are welcome. What is asked is a sincere willingness to engage fully, with openness, curiosity, and effort. As my Zen teacher often reminds us, “Zazen is hard work.” This retreat offers both the structure and support to meet that work skillfully.
All practices are guided by Douglas Johnson, E-RYT 500, YACEP, and OM.
